BREEDING UPDATE

The last year or so since this website has gone up has been a busy time in breeding for improved Cashmere production. Earlier last year we saw the export of Bathampton Genetics to South Africa and in last November the ACGA Merrrit breed of Cashmeres was launched. I'm proud to say that we are the only flock in the country that is made up 100% by 'Grade A' Merrrit Cashmeres. We also have the most animals on the ACGA Merrrit trait leader list of any herd in Australia. This is a very important achievement as the Merrrit grading is all done based on objective performance.

AND SOME DOES

This year we had three does crack the 'half ton' in the superfine category. That is they produced more than 500 grams of cashmere finer than 15.5 microns.

Bathampton Fiona Max 72

1. 14.25um, 52.01%, 192g

2. 15.38um, 55.75%, 541g

Fiona is about 15 to 20 generations removed from her feral ancestors captured in western NSW or western Qld in the 1970s. Those lovely but tough old does produced around 30 to 50 grams of 17 or so micron cashmere each year as adults. We've come a long way since then!

Bathampton Dadada Mix 4

1. 15.47um, 46.84%, 265g

2. 14.78um, 55.68%, 590g

Bathampton Daisy Mix 28

1. 15.54um, 45.68%, 194g

2. 14.98um, 64.24%, 575g

Of course there are stronger does that produce more Cashmere, but lets not kid ourselves, it is the superfine, ultra-soft cashmere that is the most luxurious!
